Particle counters – a small change that could have a huge impact on your controlled environment efficiencies

East Anglian contamination control specialists Guardtech urging applications across Life Sciences, High-Tech Engineering and Healthcare to consider positive effects continuous monitoring can have for on-going cleanroom performance as well as operational success
WHILE airborne particle monitoring has long been associated with meeting specific ISO 14644-1 and GMP regulatory requirements, modern particle counting technology is increasingly helping Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences, Healthcare, Semiconductor and Advanced Manufacturing organisations optimise performance, reduce downtime and make better-informed operational decisions.
Particle counters provide real-time visibility of airborne contamination, enabling teams to identify issues before they become costly production problems.
Rather than waiting until routine environmental monitoring identifies an issue, continuous or regular particle counting allows facilities to understand exactly how their cleanrooms behave throughout the working day. Every door opening, material transfer, maintenance activity and personnel movement creates an impact on airborne particulate levels. By analysing these trends, businesses can refine working practices to minimise contamination events while improving productivity.
For manufacturers operating high-value production processes, the benefits can be significant.
Unexpected contamination can lead to rejected batches, expensive investigations, unnecessary cleaning cycles and lost manufacturing time. Particle counters provide immediate feedback that enables operators to intervene early, often preventing minor environmental changes from developing into major quality issues.
“We need to change the narrative when it comes to particle counting,” says Guardtech Service Manager John Merrill. “It shouldn’t just be about meeting standards or ticking boxes – this technology can help applications drastically improve the performance of their controlled environments.
“That, in turn, means better yields and more efficient running of facilities – and, therefore, more profitable and roundly successful organisations. All just by investing in a particle counter solution of some kind and then building it into their process in a manner that suits them.”
Particle counting technology plays a valuable role during commissioning, maintenance and HVAC optimisation.
Cleanroom managers can quickly verify whether filtration systems are performing correctly, identify deteriorating HEPA filters before they fail completely and assess how airflow changes influence cleanliness across different areas of the facility. This proactive approach helps maximise equipment life while reducing unplanned maintenance costs.
Guardtech installed a continuous airborne particle counting system at GKN Aerospace as part of their 1,650sqm facility installation in East Cowes.
The system was connected to a GT Scan Pro Environmental Monitoring System (EMS), measuring a number of critical parameters including temperature, humidity and pressure alongside the particle counts, providing real-time data updates to ensure their process was never compromised.
The University of Sheffield, for whom Guardtech installed a 400sqm Grade C cleanroom at their stunning Gene Therapy Innovation and Manufacturing Centre (GTIMC), opted for a GT Scan Max EU GMP Annex 11 compliant EMS.
That system featured viable air sampling technology for microbiological continuous monitoring – a critical requirement of EU GMP Annex 1 regulations.
But alongside the more heavy-duty monitoring solutions, there is also the option of portable handheld instruments, that have grown in popularity due to their flexibility.
“Whenever we provide a more modest modular cleanroom or a smaller-scale Isopod Rapid Cleanroom pod system, we always introduce clients to our handheld particle counter range,” adds Guardware Cleanroom Consultant Jordan Lucas.
“It’s a cost-effective, easy-to-use product that is perfect for spot checks. Regular use of a handheld counter, when done right, is the perfect way to ensure your filters are working the way they need to be, giving you that extra peace of mind that your cleanroom is performing the way it should be.”
Guardware Cleanroom Hardware’s ISOcount Plus handheld range allow operators to rapidly check production suites are up to standard.
Their intuitive touchscreen interfaces, long battery life and ability to generate reports aligned with ISO 14644-1 make them suitable for both routine environmental monitoring and investigative work.
Many units also record temperature and humidity alongside particle counts, creating a more complete picture of environmental performance.
The data generated can also support wider continuous improvement initiatives.
Facilities are increasingly using particle count trends to optimise gowning procedures, evaluate cleaning effectiveness, validate process changes and identify opportunities to streamline production without compromising contamination control. Over time, this evidence-based approach helps facilities become more predictable, more efficient and ultimately more profitable.
For organisations embracing Industry 4.0 principles, modern particle counters offer even greater value through network connectivity and remote monitoring capabilities. Data can be exported directly into facility management systems, allowing environmental conditions to be monitored across multiple cleanrooms simultaneously and providing instant alerts if predetermined limits are exceeded.
Andrew Cressey, ISO Commercial Manager at Guardtech, echoes Merrill’s sentiments that particle counters have evolved into far more than a compliance instrument.
“Environmental monitoring shouldn’t simply be about ticking a regulatory box,” he said. “Modern particle counters give facilities valuable operational intelligence. By understanding exactly what’s happening inside a cleanroom in real time, businesses can improve workflows, reduce waste, minimise downtime and ultimately protect both product quality and profitability.”
He added: “Whether you’re operating an aseptic pharmacy, Semiconductor facility, Medical Device production suite or Advanced Engineering cleanroom, having immediate access to reliable airborne particle data helps teams make faster, more informed decisions every single day.”
Guardware supply a comprehensive range of remote and handheld particle counters designed to support cleanroom operators across Pharmaceutical manufacturing, Healthcare, Life Sciences, Electronics, Aerospace and other contamination-controlled industries, helping customers move beyond compliance and unlock new efficiencies throughout their facilities.
